Frequently Asked Questions

Who qualifies for OAS in Canada?

Canadians 65+ who have lived in Canada for at least 10 years after age 18 qualify. Full OAS requires 40 years of Canadian residence after age 18. You receive a prorated amount (years/40) if you have fewer than 40 years.

What is the OAS clawback?

If your net income exceeds $95,323 in 2026, you must repay 15% of the amount above this threshold, up to your full OAS benefit. The repayment is made via your income tax return and reduces future OAS payments.

Should I defer OAS past 65?

Deferring OAS increases your monthly benefit by 0.6% per month (7.2%/year), up to a maximum of 36% at age 70. Deferring makes sense if you have other income sources before 70 and you expect to live into your mid-80s or beyond.
