Frequently Asked Questions

How is Ontario income tax calculated?

Ontario uses five progressive brackets (5.05% to 13.16%). A surtax of 20% applies on Ontario basic tax exceeding $5,818 and an additional 36% above $7,446. The Ontario Health Premium (up to $900/yr) is also levied.

What is the CPP contribution for 2026?

Employees pay 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600 (YMPE), plus 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000 (CPP2). Self-employed pay double (both employee + employer shares).

What is the Ontario Health Premium?

The OHP is a separate levy ranging from $0 (income ≤ $20,000) to a maximum of $900/year (income over $200,600). It is collected through your income tax return.

Do I pay EI if I am self-employed?

Generally no — self-employed individuals in Ontario are not required to pay EI premiums, unless they opt in voluntarily for access to special EI benefits.
